Description of Information not available
After downloading and installing the OEM software and connecting the equipment as directed I am unable to initialize my J2534 device with the car in order to reprogram.
Description of steps taken to obtain information (help/contact function on website, websites, etc.)
Reviewed the help link on, it had a general number to call, which was no help. It then said to call a local dealer, they had no clue what I was talking about.
Other Comments or Concerns
I get an error message in the downloaded software when trying to connect, the message reads, "j2534 failure" "Error :: Rom ID Read Error." I contacted tech support at Drew Technologies, the J2534 device manufacturer, and they didn't have a solution. They said the problem was on the dealers side and to contact them and submit a request via NASTF.

Hyundai Motor America has responded to the complainant directly. The repair shop was not intending to perform a specific ECM reprogram. They connected their J2534 pass-through device and they were trying to search for and perform any updates that might be available. After the initialization of their J2534 device there were no updates found and the message: “ROM ID Read Error” appeared. Based on this, it was understood by the shop that communication had failed. The J2534 pass through device communicated normally with the vehicle however, since there are no ECM software updates available for this specific vehicle currently, the above message was displayed. Adherence to the information published in a TSB is required to successfully perform a re-flash. TSB’s typically outline specific production date ranges, VIN ranges and ROM ID’s as qualification for reprogramming. These parameters should be checked against the vehicle prior to reprogramming. We are reviewing this concern and investigating ways in which we can change the message that is displayed in the event that there are no ECM updates available to help avoid any confusion.
