DaimlerChrysler contacted Mr. Skiver via telephone on January 26, 2007. The issue is that the VIN from the powertrain control module (PCM) installed on a 2001 model year Dodge Caravan cannot be erased to allow writing the correct VIN into the PCM. The vehicle performs and operates normally but the air bag light is illuminated. The air bag code states “Not configured for side air bag. Need VIN.” A DRB III, DaimlerChrysler’s diagnostic tool, was used to diagnose and service this vehicle. Mr. Skiver believes the PCM was obtained from a junk yard. The vehicle is from an auction lot. DaimlerChrysler’s engineering design does not allow VINs to be erased on PCMs if the PCM contains a valid VIN. DaimlerChrysler suspects this is the case since it appears a junk yard PCM was installed in this vehicle. DaimlerChrysler recommended that Mr. Skiver purchase a refurbished PCM from an independent computer rebuilder. Mr. Skiver stated that he could not find any refurbished PCMs for this vehicle but a computer rebuilder in Florida has the ability to erase the VIN. Mr. Skiver wants the ability to erase the VIN. DaimlerChrysler investigated the issue further and contacted Mr. Skiver on January 30, 2007. Mr. Skiver was informed that DaimlerChrysler dealers do not have the ability to erase and write VINs on used PCMs that include valid VINs. DaimlerChrysler recommended purchasing a new or refurbished PCM or having a computer rebuilder erase the VIN. DaimlerChrysler provided Mr. Skiver with a contact from BlueStreak and informed him that BlueStreak or other computer rebuilders should be able to provide him a refurbished PCM or erase the VIN in the PCM. DaimlerChrysler also reimbursed Mr. Skiver his subscription fee for TechAuthority.
