Description of Repair unable to perform
I recommend an update to Section 2 of the PC/ED on flash reprogramming for 2006 Lincoln Zephyr as it is not complete. Below you will find a solution I came up with that would make a time saving TSB. I could find no TSB or SSM on this topic.

2006 Lincoln Zephyr 3.0L V6 FWD When performing a routine software update to correct a problem with the sun roof as suggested in a Ford TSB I made an update to the PCM. After completing the flash the vehicle set a code P1639 - Vehicle ID (VID) Block Corrupted, Not Programmed The Ford website directs you to reprogram the VID Block. The problem is that there is no procedure for doing this and the older method of reprogramming as if it were a blank PCM does not work. On a whim I went into the programmable parameters part of module reprogramming to see what PCM options I had. I found that there was an undefined block for Front wheel drive/All wheel drive. My guess is that the new software is compatible with the newer versions of the vehicle that had AWD available and this block did not previously exist in the VID. Selecting FWD and re-flashing solved the code.

Thank you for your suggestion to address the P1639 diagnostic trouble code on 2006MY Fusion/Milan/Zephyr when performing module reprogramming. We are currently considering developing a Technical Service Bulletin to address generic programming issues of this type.
